According to overseas news, two sources revealed on June 24 that ByteDance is working with US chip design company Broadcom to develop an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) computing processor, which will help ByteDance ensure an adequate supply of high-end chips amid tensions between China and the United States.
The source added that this AI chip is an ASIC chip and will be manufactured by TSMC using a 5nm process, which complies with US export control restrictions.
Since the US government imposed export controls on cutting-edge semiconductors in 2022, there has been no previous announcement of chip development cooperation involving 5nm and more advanced technologies between Chinese and US companies. The source added that the cooperation between ByteDance and Broadcom will help cut procurement costs and ensure a stable supply of high-end chips.
So far, ByteDance responded to the Science and Technology Innovation Board Daily that the news is untrue. Broadcom did not respond to a request for comment, and TSMC declined to comment on the matter.
The industry said that like many well-known global technology companies, ByteDance is also vigorously promoting the development of generative artificial intelligence, but it needs to face the situation that the supply of AI chips is seriously insufficient compared with its overseas counterparts.
ByteDance and Broadcom have been business partners since at least 2022. Broadcom said in a public statement that ByteDance has purchased the company's high-performance switch chips.
